Umbhoqo Manifesto part 1 is the first album by King Mzaiza Music, a collective created by Umbhoqo pioneer and Skhothane activist King Mzaiza and his crew.

This album shows the vast spectrum of what South African Umbhoqo music is about. Uplifting vibes meet industrial roughness and futurism. Braggadocio and larger-than-life personalities blend with township culture and a mindset based on community. This is music to make people dance, belong and protest at the same time. It's simultaneously fun, strong and angry.

You'll hear party tracks with addictive hooks and irresistible beats, like the previously released PSSNGR hit "Sithi Sithi" or the darker "Ama". But you'll also hear more experimental, fractured material, sometimes sounding like Ruff Ryders-era Swizz Beatz : "Tsala Marn", "Izinja Zasekasi", or "China Town".

Rappers – like U-Girl, Fafastra, Fezela, Da Goons, Finisher, Gento Bareto etc. – are all over the beats and the result sounds like proper sci-fi hip-hop, reminiscent of UK grime, early 2000s NYC rap and Gqom.

This music deals with daily life pressure and casual violence, but is also about fighting your way through a better living. Most songs are posse cuts, but also check Fafastra's "All Eyes On Me", an amazing solo track.

Intense stuff from the Umbhoqo camp ! It’s coming from the future, and this is now out on PSSNGR, always dedicated to promote emerging African electronic music.

Probably safe to say I have never bought a hip-hop album after a single spin, but this one grabbed me. It is as sonically and lyrically compelling as anything Eminem has done, and that it springs forth from East Africa lends it a quality that doesn’t exist anywhere else. Yet again Bandcamp becomes a conduit for exploring music that would otherwise not find its way to my ears. I found this on the Hakuna Kulala label out of Uganda that produces East African and Congolese electronic music. !!!!! Lute FP
